About the Toronto Dementia Network
In September 1999, the Ontario government launched
the Ontario Strategy for Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias, a comprehensive
plan to invest $70 million over five years in ten specific initiatives
to improve the quality of life for Ontarians affected by Alzheimer's disease
and other dementias.
Initiative 9-A called for regions across Ontario to develop Dementia Networks to improve the system of care for persons with
dementia, their families and caregivers. Currently, there 36 communities in Ontario have formed their own dementia networks.
Toronto began by hosting a meeting of health professionals in April 2002. A Steering Committee was formed, and held its first meeting
in June 2002.
- Membership in the Toronto Dementia Network is inclusive, inviting the participation of all organizations and individuals with
a stake in dementia care.
- The Toronto Dementia Network collects, organizes
and disseminates information about dementias and dementia services in
Toronto.
- The Toronto Dementia Network strives to heighten
public awareness of dementia and dementia services, increases the ability
of individuals and health professionals to plan for dementia care, and
identifies strengths and weaknesses in the service delivery network.
